Abstract
The power control problem when cells are overlaid and underlaid in a CDMA environment is considered in this paper. The transmitted power and the transmission rate of the users are controlled so that the resultant interference is kept low enough that both the overlaid and underlaid cells can coexist and the overall capacity is improved. The problems of minimizing the total transmitted power as well as maximizing the total transmission rate are considered. The first problem can be interpreted as determining the system capacity while the second one can be considered as maximizing the quality of service given a fixed number of users in the system. The reverse link of this overlaid/underlaid system is considered in this paper
