Abstract :
An analysis of the great characteristics of gas-insulated, multichannel, multiple-stage, high-voltage switches is reported. Several types of switches with different configurations were studied. The static self-breakdown voltage of the 15-stage switch was designed to be 500 kV. Analysis of the switches´ field distributions and behavior was carried out in two aspects. Static field strengths along the longitudinal dimension of the switches at several different transverse locations were calculated using the charge simulation method. Experimental studies of the switch are being carried out both in DC breakdown and pulsed breakdown modes. Preliminary results indicate that the switches´ behavior is inconsistent with the theoretical evaluations
