Abstract :
In this paper, a new technique for high voltage measurement for DC and AC systems using a High Voltage Electric Field Motor (HVEFM) is proposed. The rotor speed of HVEFM is linearly proportional to the applied voltage. Therefore, the input voltage can be measured by detecting the rotor speed. The range of the measured voltage level is dependent of the pressure and types of gases in the HVEFM. The structure is a significant factor affecting the accuracy of measurement, and the range of measured voltage level. A Finite Element Method (FEM) program is used for computing the voltage level and electric field distribution at any point of the HVEFM. The calculated results offer the design of an appropriate structure, so that the relationship between the motor speed and measured voltage level is linear and measurement can be applicable to higher voltage levels. The advantages of this technique are lightweight, compact, easy to install, and low cost when compared to a conventional divider technique
