Abstract :
Pre-annealing of type I gratings at increasing temperatures below regeneration is shown to thermally stabilise the gratings to temperatures as high as 600degC. This allows optimisation of the grating strength and the temperature stability to suit the application. It also raises questions about the fundamental assumptions made in glass annealing studies and prediction.
