Abstract
An automated material handling system utilizing overhead cranes has been installed which performs the in-process-storage (IPS) function for a seamless pipe production facility. Materials flowing to and from various process lines are routed through this in-process-storage facility. A hierarchical structure is employed to control this system, using a total of forty-five MC68000 based control computers plus one VAX 11/750. This report reviews the unique system features and computer network architecture of this automated material handling project.
