Abstract :
Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) Systems are used in healthcare organizations to improve efficiency and further system transparency by tracking assets, staff and patients While the organizations currently doing business in this field have their own methods to implement their technology the need remains for an unbiased, researched implementation method. A best practice model for RFID implementation was developed free of vendor specific rhetoric. While not intended to be a step-by-step solution, the best practice model comprises information gathered through a national survey of 24 implemented and 22 non-implemented facilities. Extensive research provides implementing organizations a framework to follow in order to successfully, and in the most cost effectively implement RFID. Concepts such as inclusion of a larger champion - multiple spearheading departments - spectrum analysis, and previous wireless system leverage all play a role in the best practice model. Understanding any one of these concepts individually may be of little use, but oversight as a whole and understanding the system in concert with the environment can lend to a more effective implementation.
