Abstract
This paper discusses emerging core technologies and philosophies that will enable systems to communicate with each other, understand what is said within the proper context, and respond properly with conclusions and/or operations thereby promoting interoperability. The efforts described are currently underway supporting the IEEE P1391 initiative to define an approach for standardizing interfaces associated with knowledge-based systems in sensor-based processing applications. An introduction describing the problem attempting to be solved is followed by an outline of the goals and issues associated with the project. Details regarding the proposed standard architecture are then provided. The paper concludes with the current status of development efforts
