Abstract :
This paper aims to model the transfer characteristics of underground power lines as a communication channel with loads such as the ballast for the streetlight. The characteristic impedance and the propagation constant of the underground cable for the power distribution are determined experimentally. Also, the impedance of the load is determined by the proposed measuring method when the load is operating. These results are utilized to model the transfer characteristics of power lines with loads. The model is verified by the laboratory and field experiments. Finally, the paper presents the transfer characteristics of the underground power line with the ballast for the HID lamp in the field.
