Abstract :
The IEC 61850 series specifies elements of the substation automation system (SAS) such as logical nodes as a functional unit, which must be chosen and woven by a system engineer to meet user requirements. The authors have specified logical nodes to monitor and control transmission lines and switch-gear according to policies that aim to produce an intelligent electronic device (IED) common to multiple utilities. This paper describes two IED prototypes based on the functional specifications and experimental results showing how the IEDs meet requirements from perspectives of functionality and performance. This suggests that the functional specification can be used to implement an IED commonly used by multiple utilities.
