  • Abstract
Intelligent tutoring system is an educational software that helps students to learn some subject without a human tutor. Most of the intelligent tutoring systems adopt keyboard/mouse-based windows-icons-menus-pointing interfaces. However, the keyboard/mouse-based interface is inconvenient for inputting mathematical expressions due to complex nature of 2-D structures. This paper reports progress of our ongoing project exploring adoption of pen-based interface for intelligent math tutoring. We are developing a math tutoring system by which students can learn by themselves the way of solving simultaneous equations. Interaction between the tutoring system and a student is entirely pen-based, as you solve the problem with a pencil on a paper. Understanding student´s knowledge state by overseeing pen interaction, the tutoring system provides appropriate feedback such as pointing out mistakes, praising successes, giving guidelines, or reassigning new problems. In this paper we propose an intelligent tutoring system for simultaneous equations and efficient user interfaces for intelligent math tutoring system.
