Abstract :
The CU HVDC transmission system is over twenty-five years old, and its reliable operation continues to be critical. In the last several years, three major life extension projects have been done. Experiences with these may help others facing similar challenges with aging equipment. Completing them successfully has required careful planning and project management to meet tight project schedules, particularly extremely short outages to do the actual installation and commissioning. A major project to replace the converter control equipment that was completed in 2004 will be described in detail.
