Abstract
Optical polarimeters that measure the state of polarization (SOP) of fully or partially polarized monochromatic or quasi-monochromatic light traveling in free space or guided by optical fibers are briefly reviewed. Fast detection of the SOP, as described by the four Stokes parameters, has important applications for optical sensing, monitoring, and coherent light-wave communication systems.
