Abstract
The propagation and distortion of subsurface surveying radar pulses in lossy media possessing frequency-dependent conductivity and permittivity are studied in detail, and the causes of the distortion of the pulses are pointed out. A method for rectifying the distorted waves is given. Subsurface surveying radar pulses undergo both severe attenuation and waveform distortion when propagating through lossy media. Both are very dependent on the kinds of lossy media and the depth of the objects. The distorted signals can be rectified by removing or filtering the lower-frequency components. But the number of low-frequency components to be filtered is greatly dependent on the lossy media and buried depth. Hence, the lowest frequency values of the high-pass filters in an actual subsurface surveying radar should be variable.<>
