Abstract :
The presentation explains the basic layout of the 700 MW Karahnjukar Hydroelectric Project being constructed in north-eastern Iceland by Landsvirkjun, the National Power Company, and near to completion now. The challenges during construction, particularly the difficulties related to the extensive underground works, the Project includes extreme long headrace and access tunnels of around 75 km. The main dam construction is also explained as well as the challenging commissioning work for the generating units and the time constraints of the project. All 6 generating units are already in operation.
