Abstract :
This paper describes the development of a stability model for the island power system of Cyprus. Development of the stability model is a vital step in the ongoing efforts by the Cyprus Transmission System Operator (TSO) to address issues that are critical to the economic and reliable operation of the Cyprus Power System. Island power systems, by their very nature being isolated, are highly vulnerable to disturbances as compared to the larger interconnected power systems. Often, the difference between surviving such disturbances versus system collapse and blackout depends upon a few crucial operating parameters and margins. To determine such important parameters and operating margins, a comprehensive and validated dynamic model is essential for accurately simulating system response to various types of disturbances that occur in an electrical system. A proper dynamic model is also essential for evaluating spinning reserve requirements, optimizing under-frequency load shedding settings for improving responsiveness with minimum interruptions, out-of-step protection, integrating wind resources into the grid and addressing voltage collapse, voltage recovery and reactive power related issues. The dynamic model for the Cyprus power system was developed by utilizing the field data and actual recorded system disturbances. Then the models were further refined so that the simulated responses matched the field measurements. In addition to describing these steps, results illustrating the performance of the model against recent system disturbances are presented. The paper also describes the Transient Fault Data Recording System that is currently installed in the Cyprus power system. Issues related to data collection and model validation are described. Finally, the paper summarizes the TSO´s ongoing efforts to maintain up-to-date sys
