Abstract :
The design of high performance electromagnetic calorimeter for the future Collider detector required a high granularity sampling calorimeter, a sandwich of absorber and a sensitive material. A new sampling calorimeter prototype using a very thin plastic scintillator as an active material and tungsten as a passive absorber and the multi-pixel photon counter (MPPC) for readout has been made to produce better position resolution. As a part of this R&D study, Small Extruded Plastic Scintillator of size 10 × 45 × 3 mm3 and a tungsten plate with 3.5 mm thick are sandwiched together to Fabricate a scintillator base electromagnetic calorimeter prototype. The Prototype has a stack of 30 layers, having dimension of 18 × 18 cm. The total number of channels is 2160 for readout consisting of not only longitudinal but also transverse layers. The scintillation light produced in plastic scintillator strips enters a wavelength shifting (WLS) fiber placed inside the plastic scintillator is guided to the sensitive photo detector 1600 pixel MPPC with a sensitive region of 1 × 1 mm2. The electromagnetic calorimeter test beam performance has been studied with various electron and pion energies during summer 2008 and 2009 at Fermilab. We present test beam setup, analysis procedure and results on test beam of electromagnetic calorimeter performance in particular the temperature corrections and systematic errors.
