Abstract
The MEI (measured equation of invariance) procedure is modified to work with the finite element method. The modified MEI method was tested on several scatterer geometries for both TE (transverse electric) an TM (transverse magnetic) waves. For problems involving simple materials, the modified MEI method gives excellent results even if the artificial boundary is very close to the scatterer. In these cases, the modal expansion ABC (absorbing boundary condition) gives reasonable results, but not as good as the modified MEI method. The modified MEI method approaches the real solution as the mesh is refined.<>
