Abstract :
The present paper is an introductory summary of an alternative roughness theory to classic rough set theory (RST), the granular rough theory (GrRT). GrRT differs from classic RST mainly in the underlying representation model, the granular representation calculus, which is designed to accommodate semi-structured information sources, to explicitly encode semantic contexts inherent in information sources such as the schema of the information table, and to incorporate mereological relationships as basis for encoding application contexts. GrRT differs from rough mereology in that the latter is just an application of roughness to original mereology of Lesniewski, whereas GrRT is intended to be a pure mereological rather than set theoretic approach to roughness formation. It is expected that this effort can inspire more interdisciplinary cooperation for new methodologies.
