Abstract :
A discussion is presented of an alternative approach to computer-integrated manufacture (CIM) involving mill-wide control layers as part of the control hierarchy. The authors´ alternative embraces mill-wide control system and business planning, communication software, standard interfaces, real-time operation control, and a phasing-in approach that addresses people and cultural issues. This method does not risk obsolescence or require large initial capital investment, but focuses on manufacturing objectives.<>
