  • Abstract
Network congestion greatly threats the performance of network and even results in network paralysis. It is of the utmost importance for network management to detect and locate the source of network congestion accurately. In this paper, we propose an active congestion detection mechanism based on network tomography. The contribution of this paper is twofold. In the first place, we do path-level congestion detection not only using loss rate but also using delay. Secondly, we present a link-level congestion detection technique based on network tomography. The active congestion detection mechanism is a bran-new idea and is of a definite practicability. Experiment results indicate the method is effective and of great importance for network congestion detection. It also has further development potential for large-scale network congestion control.
