            Abstract :
Experimental and theoretical techniques are being used to investigate the response of gas-insulated substations (GISs) to fast transients. Sensors were developed to record fast transient waveforms accurately over a wide frequency range. Their performance under fast transient conditions was verified using a D-dot probe with a known response. Good agreement was recorded by instrumentation with a 200-MHz bandwidth. A computer code was developed to enable electrical stresses in a GIS under fast transient conditions to be studied. The program solves Maxwell´s equations in two dimensions using a finite-difference method. The electric field structure around insulating barriers was studied, and initial results are presented
