Abstract :
Automatic incident detection techniques are currently benefiting from progress in the application of new information and communications technology to traffic management. Recently, other technologies, such as video image processing, have been investigated. Furthermore, new theories are now also explored in the context of incident detection. Choosing an adapted system/algorithm becomes a complex task. Thus, a serious investigation of the strengths and limitations of conventional and new algorithms appears necessary. The paper focuses on this aspect. Investigations reported are undertaken in the contest of the gradual implementation of a monitoring system on the south part of the "Boulevard Peripherique" of Paris
