Abstract
A major new motorway bridge and associated roadworks is being constructed across the River Lagan in Belfast to add to the 3 existing city centre bridges. However, its close proximity to the city centre will result in considerable interaction between vehicles on the motorway and traffic in the city centre streets. The article describes the development of a traffic control system having: a composite control system; data communications; message signs; automatic incident detection and ramp control; control room terminals operating with both the urban system and the motorway system; congestion analysis; CCTV surveillance; and motorway emergency telephones
