The traveller information system of Finnish National Road Administration

It is contended that traveller information should be a natural everyday service for the road users offered by Road Administration. The idea is to tell the road users the quality of the service of the road network at a given time. Traffic volumes, average speeds, road weather, road maintenance, accidents they are just different aspects of the service level and in many ways entangled together. All of them must be told about but in the way that road users find it relevant for them and easy to understand. A suitable way of describing the service level for an individual is to recommend the optimum route according to the present and forecast service level and to estimate the travel time of that route, but also some common remarks of the present and forecast service level can be given. In addition, during the trip the road users must be informed if the service level changes so that it affects the travel time or the travel comfort.
