Various forms of adjustable frequency link converter drives (AFDs) presently in vogue are classified according to their power electronic circuit configurations. Consideration is given to the factors influencing drive reliability, maintainability, and the AFD impact on the utility supply network. The adoption of a particular control strategy for an AFD also influences drive performance, which is discussed
