Abstract
The first major installation of AC adjustable speed drive technology in North America was in 1987 on a Kraft linerboard machine at Union Camp Corporation´s (UCC) Savannah, GA, papermill. The success of that installation led to the application of AC drive technology to a high-speed electric backstand winder in the UCC Savannah mill in 1988-9. This AC winder drive project is described in detail, with attention given to engineering, construction, and shutdown. It is noted that, since start-up of the winder drive system in April 1989, there have been no problems relative to the drive control systems
