Abstract :
Trapped Yb/sup +/ ions are investigated for application as a frequency standard. A precision measurement of the ground-state hyperfine separation in /sup 171/Yb/sup +/ has been used for the control of an RF oscillator. Narrow optical lines of Yb/sup +/ are also available for clock transitions. Their application to future frequency standards is indicated.<>
