Abstract :
The development of a software system, called CART1, which will enhance the productivity of the electrical distribution system designer is described. An important aspect of CART1 is that its software design is easily modifiable. This was motivated by two reasons. First, the underlying design methodologies are likely to be constantly adapted and refined. Second, each electrical utility has its own unique set of design factors and constraints. For these and other reasons it was decided to base the design of the CART1 software on the object-oriented approach. How a distribution system designer would use computer software with a good graphical user interface to route and select the cables in a new scheme is described. Based on this functional description the design of the CART1 software is outlined. An example showing the operation of an initial implementation of the CART1 software is presented
