Author_Institution :

Abstract :
CFCs 11 and 12 have been successfully used in large centrifugal chillers for more than 50 years. The Montreal Protocol has banned the use of CFCs, necessitating the development of new products and technologies using the replacements R-123 and R-134a. These new refrigerants are available in new equipment as well as for use in converting existing CFC 11 and 12 equipment. Here, the author describes how replacement, conversion, and containment are the three primary alternatives for the equipment owner who is facing dwindling supplies of CFCs
