Abstract :
The modeling and analysis of switching power converters has gone through an extended measuring process, finally enabling their modeling and analysis by means of generalized and simple mathematical representations. The design and production of switching converters on the other hand still lacks from a suitable, general approach, and remains up to now intrinsically linked to specific topologies and applications. Yet, a promising approach to tackle this has been proposed, the power electronics building block, a concept that effectively expedites and simplifies the design process of converters, while striving to achieve the widespread industrial utilization of power electronics. This paper thence proposes a generalized modeling approach for switching power converters that encompasses the advantages of the switching/transfer function and power electronics building block concepts. Thus greatly simplifies the overall modeling, analysis, design, and production processes of converters. In order to show the effectiveness of the proposed method, this paper presents the modeling of typical voltage- and current-source topologies found in high-power applications.
