Abstract :
A novel approach is presented for cooling lightweight transistor amplifier modules for high-power operation. The feasibility of fabricating UHF CW (continuous wave) power amplifiers with weight-to-power output ratios of the order of 0.2 gm/W and power output approaching 2 kW (CW) is demonstrated. 1800 W (CW) at 425 MHz was obtained from a four-transistor amplifier that weighed 13 oz. Amplifier design and construction are detailed, and module performance is discussed.<>
