Abstract :
A viable option which can be considered by utility system planners in implementing the addition of over 13000 circuit miles of transmission lines currently being forecast over the next ten years is presented. The option is high phase order (HPO) transmission or the transmission of power utilizing six phases or more. What makes this subject unique is that the concept of HPO transmission, more specifically six-phase power transmission, is for the first time being commercially demonstrated. The background in previous HPO research is discussed. The need for a six-phase demonstration project is identified. Methodologies to address the uprating of double circuit lines, the impact of the six phase demonstration project on utility substations, and tests planned for the demonstration phase are detailed. The issues presented are within the context of the work completed and currently underway on the New York State Electric and Gas Corporation´s (NYSEG´s) Goudey-Oakdale transmission line. This work, when completed, will represent a significant contribution to the power industry in taking a new technology from concept to commercial viability
