Most traditional methods to deal with the floods in the waterfront area are planting trees, building dams, leading and dredging canals. And all these methods have played an important role in ensuring the urban safety. In this paper, we concentrate on the urban waterfront area design and introduce the concept of greenway based on the three traditional approaches. We develop a new framework in the flood prevention and hazard reduction system of the waterfront cities. The greenway is consisting of three parts; 1) the macroscopic planning; 2) the middle-scope controlling; 3) the microscopic designing. We believe that the combination of Greenway and the flood prevention and hazard reduction system will bring the citizen a healthy, comfortable and safe waterfront life.
