Abstract :
This paper presents a roadmap of progress in the area of optical networking as encountered in the area of telecommunication core and access networks; it is undertaken through the IST Network of Excellence e-Photon/ONe+. In the face of the huge growth of digital information [from 3-160 billion Gigabytes in 6 years] telecommunication networks are transforming into IT networks and will rely increasingly on the application of optics to support the demand for increased capacity and flexibility at all levels. The paper addresses future trends in systems and networks. It reviews the state of the art and key developments in the areas of transmission and switching. Technical signposts are identified which point towards future developments. Some rapidly changing areas are identified, for example the move to high speed (100 Gbps) transmission.
