Abstract :
The authors identify some of the various types and levels of knowledge involved in the design process as well as their relationships and characteristics. They attempt to identify the knowledge pertinent to the actual design process and to clarify the distinctions between static and dynamic knowledge in the metadomain of design. The knowledge in both the application and metadomains is expressed in terms of Petri nets, relying exclusively on its modeling capabilities. Knowledge representation for design is also examined. The knowledge structures identified with design include the static aspects of the metadomain, the dynamic properties and the factual, relational and inferential knowledge within these areas
