Abstract :
The aim of this paper is to explain new technique for speech compression. Speech compression is the process of converting human speech signals into more compactable form for communication and storage without losing intelligibility of the original signal. Discrete wavelet transforms and Wavelet Packet decompositions are the recent techniques used to materialize compression. Malayalam, one of the South Indian languages has been used for this experiment. Successful compression and reconstruction of isolated Malayalam spoken words with perfect audibility is possible by using Wavelet Packet Decompositions.
