Abstract :
Wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) is basically frequency division multiplexing in the optical frequency domain, where on a single optical fiber there are multiple communication channels at different wavelengths. In this paper, we first analyze the different IP/WDM networking functional models, then discuss the IP over switched WDM architecture. We present an analysis the potential benefits of MPLS networks. Currently, the optical network technology holds the key to the next-generation networks. In particular, wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) networks have emerged as a promising candidate for next-generation networks providing large available bandwidth. A WDM network consists of WDM switches connected by fiber optical links. In each link, multiple wavelengths are available.
