Abstract :
The use of electric motors in class I, division 2 locations is a common practice in the petroleum and chemical industry. Experience has shown that induction motors do not normally provide sources of ignition for the combustible vapors that may occasionally be present. The application of adjustable speed drives (ASDs) introduces power that is not purely sinusoidal that cause the motors to run at higher temperatures than on pure sine-wave power. The need for further evaluation of induction motors powered by ASDs was needed to assure that the motors would not be an ignition source for the combustible vapors that may be present. This paper discusses the testing and test results of some medium voltage motors powered by ASDs for division 2 application
