Abstract
The inspection of overhead line networks is a statutory duty. The Electricity Supply Regulations 1988 require under Part V, Paragraph 24 that: "The supplier shall take all reasonably practicable steps to inspect his installations to ensure compliance with these Regulations". The Regulations however give no guidance as to the method or frequency of inspection nor is there any guidance on the means of data collection. All these are the responsibility of the supplier. Whether or not a supplier\´s actions in respect of inspection procedures were sufficient would probably be judged by the Courts in the event of a prosecution. The author discusses maintenance and maintenance responsibilities, and growth of the wood pole system. Past and present approaches to inspection and maintenance routines are described
