  • Abstract
A description is presented of AL, an adaptive listening program. It is a prototyped auditory user interface system which provides adaptive management of a user´s listening space (ULS). Specifically, AL was designed to manage the communication of auditory messages to a user within the ULS. AL communicates to a user the occurrence of multiple events in parallel by presenting a different auditory signal (sound) for each respective event. A general overview of AL is given along with several significant applications. A discussion is outlined of a musical model of audition from which to construct the model of human audition used by AL. The conditions for presenting multiple auditory signals within the ULS are also described.<>
