Abstract :
This paper evaluates the benefits that can be achieved in the operation of LV distribution networks with a large penetration of distributed generation when the inverters that interface with the network are used as shunt active power filters to reduce the zero sequence current component generated by unbalanced loads. For that purpose, a typical urban distribution network has been simulated and several inverters have been connected to the network. A current control mode has been implemented for the inverters so any current component in the system can be compensated or filtered. The reduction in the power losses and the increase in the voltage quality have been quantified for the network.
