Abstract
The authors present a study in which an immersed-coil heat exchanger is both a water heater and a heat exchanger, with the coil immersed in a water tank, which forms the shell of the heat exchanger. In all the experiments the heat-transfer area of the coil was held fixed. Several coil pitches were chosen for the geometric study. The influence of the flow rate of the circulating fluid in the coil is discussed. It was found that the performance of the heat exchanger depends on the temperature difference and flow rate rather than on the pitch. To illustrate the applications of the concept, an immersed-coil heat exchanger for water heating is presented
