Abstract :
This paper reviews up-to-date Chireix outphasing power amplifier configurations and proposes a compact adaptive power combining network. It yields a lower loss and compact size over conventional architectures. Multilevel drive modulation is introduced to further improve the efficiency at low power level. The proposed concept was verified by standard CMOS 0.18 μm with a 1.8 V power supply at 5.2 GHz. The simulation results show that the PA exhibits a 17.4 dBm maximum output power, together with 30% PAE at 7 dB power back-off region. Compared with the conventional class-AB PA, the PAE improvement is 12% and 14% at 7 dB and 3 dB power back-off regions, respectively.
