Abstract
A novel approach is proposed for contingency selection, which chooses the contingencies that cause the worst voltage problems. The basic concept of this new approach is to extract and utilize some of the information available in the contingency analysis results from previous cycles. An adaptive pre-filter is designed which can filter out a large portion of noncritical contingency cases at very little cost. The output of the pre-filter is an already shortened list of contingency cases which can then be fed into any conventional contingency selection program. The filter is automatically updated to reflect changes in the power system. The combination of the pre-filter with a contingency selection program is significantly faster than the selection program by itself. Test results reported here show that the proposed approach is reliable and efficient.<>
