Abstract
The authors report on the development of an adaptive procedure for the compensation of the masking effect in automatic PI (performance index) contingency ranking algorithms. A vector-norm based PI formulation is introduced, which allows a quantitative description of the masking effect. The advantage of the adaptive procedures is founded on the fact that the security analysis is carried out cyclicly. The new method has been tested extensively for six realistic European power networks, considering typical daily load curve topology changes. The results show that the adaptive procedure appears to work satisfactorily without sacrificing computational speed. The masking effect can be reduced significantly.<>
