  • Abstract
A current meter which measures water velocity, temperature, conductivity, pressure, and suspended sediment concentrations is described. It utilizes a data system that allows more complex sampling programs. User-friendly software allows easy system configuration for different deployment. Two instruments have been tested in a bottom-mounted configuration. For one configuration, the current meter communicated via a hardwire link to a buoy which, in turn, had a packet radio link to a ship. In the second, buoyant data capsules on the bottom instrument are periodically released, rise to the surface, and transmit data from the bottom instrument to shore via ARGOS. These telemetry links transmit data and check the operation of the remote instrument to alert the user to unusual environmental conditions or instrumental problems
