The tectonic evolution takes on quasi passive continental marginal characteristics in the Qiongdongnan basin, northern South China Sea. There are better exploration perspectives in deepwater areas of this basin with excellent hydrocarbon accumulation conditions, including three sets of high quality source rocks, four favorable reservoir-seal assemblages, various types of trap, multiple pathways and appropriate temperature-pressure distribution for hydrocarbon migration and accumulation. Finally, it is suggested the low uplift of southern Lingshui sag and southern Songnan sag is the feasible area for deepwater hydrocarbon exploration in the near future.
