Abstract
The characteristics of material surges in a precalciner kiln are discussed. The various origins of these surges were identified. The three major reasons for unstable operation are discussed. Looking at an unstable operation forced the engineers to look at the overall operation, not only a cyclone or a preheater. Solving this problem provided savings in the plant which included: a high level of reliability (98%) through consistent operation; high uptime on the kiln (reaching 90%); low heat consumption as a consequence of consistent operation; and safe operation by avoidance of tertiary air duct pluggage
