  • Abstract
A new method for experimentally simulating the interference between UWB (ultra wideband) and WLAN (wireless LAN) systems is presented. The method employs a GTEM (gigahertz transverse electromagnetic) cell, which is usually used for EMC testing at microwave frequencies, to generate a uniform electromagnetic field with a wideband interfering signal. The method has the following advantages: 1) The evaluation of interference for wireless devices having a built-in antenna is possible because the cell can generate a wideband interfering electric field with high spatial uniformity. 2) The power of an interfering signal to the uplink and downlink of the victim system can be controlled independently, and it is also possible to simulate the interference only to the uplink or downlink because the cell has a conductive enclosed structure. In this paper, the proposed method is demonstrated using the example of the interference of an MB-OFDM (multiband orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing UWB) with an IEEE 802.11a WLAN. The measurement results for the APD (amplitude probability distribution) of the interfering UWB signal are also discussed.
