Abstract
The author highlights the provisions of the Standard for Software User Documentation (p.1063), developed by a working committee of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE). The standard can be used as a tool to develop a framework for software user documentation. Such a framework can help ensure the quality of the documentation. The author attempts to dispel ideas that the standard is based on arbitrary rules and that compliance to the standard results in ´cookie cutter´ kinds of documentation.<>
